It took Gwen a moment to wrap her head around what Jack was saying to her. It left her a bit speechless as all of the defenses she'd build up in her head - the rebuttals, the reasons, the excuses - fell by the wayside.
Embarrassed, Gwen shifted on her feet, finally building up the nerve to wander closer to his desk. If nothing else, it was better than standing there gasping at air like a dying fish.
"Yeah... Really?" she muttered, her eyes widening briefly as she examined him. "Well, you know, it's part of the job. Carin' and all that. I've seen a lot of things on the beat - nothing like what happened to Carys, mind - but enough to know that even you lot..." she paused, remembering what Jack had told her in the SUV. "What we are here to do is protect people. If we forget what it's like to be human then what's the point of it?"
