How'd you hear about us?: I was perusing other RP journals looking for interesting comms, and came across it somehow.
Do you have AIM: ShirelingX ( I only use it when requested, though.)
Character Name: Gwen Cooper
Character Journal:
alien_catcher
Description: Sort of average height, slender, with long dark brown hair and brown eyes. She tends to dress casual with a classy flair.
Backstory: Gwen is a native to Cardiff, Wales. She joined the South Wales police, as one of her strongest traits is compassion for others and a drive to set things right. However, she crossed paths with Torchwood, and more notably, Jack Harkness, and found a place where she could defend not just Cardiff, but the whole world from threats she didn't know existed before. Amazed by the things she learned from her first experience with Torchwood, she jumped at a job offer and joined their ranks. Outside of work, she lives with Rhys Williams, and they recently married.
Your take on the character's personality and story: Gwen is a fantastically complicated character. She is deeply compassionate and driven, and simultaneously selfish and impulsive. At times her behaviour is almost contradictory in nature. I feel the effect of joining Torchwood on Gwen's psyche is a large factor in her strange behaviour. She continues to be determined to make the world better, and she carries an incredible empathy for those who suffer, to the point that she will endanger her own well being to set things right. However, after joining Torchwood she suffered severely from a feeling of isolation, especially toward Rhys. Her ability to make Rhys aware of what her job entails has helped some of her insecurities, and at the same time established new grounding in their relationship which allows them to better communicate. On that same note, their new marriage has given Gwen a new lease of a life outside Torchwood, as well as giving her a potentially false sense of security that her job does not have to run her life. However, she has been irreparably damaged by some of her experiences with the team (most notably the events in "Countrycide"), and is often close to falling into the same trap of self centric thinking that she was originally brought in to combat. Also, her loyalty and love towards Jack borders on adultery at times, and she is often torn between the two most important men in her life. It is my belief that at times she is fully aware of her power over them both and uses it to manipulate them, while other times, she is simply torn between two different types of love. I could honestly go on for pages more about this, so I am going to stop myself here.
Why is your character important to the game/what can s/he bring to the plot? Gwen is, in a way, a perfect Doctor Who character because she encompasses much of what we relate to in a companion. However, she serves as Jack's companion rather than the Doctor's. She is grounded in the world around her, has deep compassion for suffering and a burning drive to defend those who cannot defend themselves. She adds a level of humanity to characters like Jack and the Doctor, who often forget how the big picture affects lives of individuals.
Please write a small sample of some sort of "in character" speech, action, or both (a link may be provided if you've written this character before):

Here is a link to Gwen in "play" mode:
Here is an example of a "diary" type entry:
If your character is related to other characters in game, have you attempted to get in touch with those players?: She is not related to any current players in the game. She is, however, very close to Ianto and Owen, so I would plan to contact their muns to let them know, at the least, she's coming on board.
Why do you want to play this character?: I've been playing Gwen in another RPG, and I was hoping to get to play her in different scenarios. I enjoy writing fanfic about her, because I find her to be wonderfully complex.
First time applicants:
What's your favorite episode of Doctor Who, Torchwood, and/or The Sarah Jane Adventures? Why?
Doctor Who, "Blink". Mainly because it encompasses everything I love about Doctor Who; the terror, the time paradox, the riveting story, and Sally Sparrow, the greatest non!companion of New Whodom.
Torchwood, "Random Shoes". It's a great Gwen episode, for starters. And I think I am kind of a sucker for those episodes that feature characters that aren't regulars. That and I think it says some significant things about the world in which Torchwood takes place.
Sarah Jane Adventures, "Whatever Happened to Sarah Jane?". It helps highlight Sarah's place in the lives of those around her, and Maria shows an insane amount of bravery for insisting Sarah Jane is still out there. It's also just a really cool idea.
